Pining for Jazz on Norfolk Island

Australians keen to 'jazz up' their holidays can join jazz star Vince Jones and a host of other saxy musicians when they swing their way to Norfolk Island later this year for the tiny island's Jazz in the Pines Festival from December 2-9.

Following sell-out concerts at least year's jazz fest, organisers recommend early bookings are required for the fifth annual event this year.

Vince Jones and his band will headline the 2007 Jazz in the Pines Festival. Joining them on the island Captain Cook labelled 'paradise' will be acclaimed guitar virtuoso Bruce Mathiske, jazz legend George Golla, funk jazz specialists Scat Man Du, gospel and soul vocalist Virna Sanzone, NZ blues band The Vipers and rag time swingers, Zenith New Orleans.

Set amongst majestic pines, convict ruins and coral lagoons, the festival's toe-tapping, finger-snapping vibe will stretch across nine concerts during the week of jazz. The concerts include lunch and dinner performances as well as two major shows featuring all the major acts. Jazz musicians will also stage roving performances along Norfolk's famous low-tax shopping strip as canny shoppers stock up on Christmas gifts.

"A holiday on Norfolk Island is always exciting but combining that with the soulful tunes of some of Australia and New Zealand's top jazz performers will make a break here extra memorable," said Norfolk Island Tourism General Manager Steve McInnes. "What better location for a celebration of feel-good music than Norfolk and its romantic coastal scenery."

Norfolk Air flies to the island eight times a week. Flights depart from from Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane. Air New Zealand operate from Auckland every Thursday and Sunday.
