This family owned property was originally one of Norfolk Islands first guest houses. These five individual cottages cottages have been built on this site and and aptly named Rose, Azalea and Gardenia for complete privacy and comfort on your holiday. The gardens have been designed to reflect the names on the cottages mixed with lots of colourful tropical plants based around the large Poinciana Tree after which the property has been named.
The property has a colourful history, and the original homestead "Redleaf" was built around 1870. In the early 1920's it boasted a beautiful orchard and was owned by the Nobbs family. Fruit was packed and sent to the Red Cross during WWII.
In the late 1920's it was a private school and children sat with their slates upon the front verandah and in the main living area.
During the second world war the Royal New Zealand Airforce took over the property and based their services there. Pictures show the camp set up, around the main homestead which housed the library. There was a mess hall and several other buildings.
In the mid 1950's the house was converted into a guest house and took up to 8 guests. It was also preferred by the Qantas Crew as a stopover base. The Ombler family did the catering for Qantas Airways from the large farmhouse style kitchen and the crew would come over to the house for afternoon tea whilst waiting for the plane to refuel.
The property was sold in the early 70's and the current owners Peter and Jackie Pye (nee Ombler) bought the property back in the early 80's and have continued to renovate and update.
Today, the Pye family welcome guests from all around the world and offer them comfortable luxury accommodation, secluded and private. Testimonials from guests prove that this is one of Norfolk Island's most popular places to stay.
The Poinciana project was completed in October 2000 and the family (including Storkey the dog), welcomed their first guests.
